PhD fellowship in Clinical Prevention Research
A PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Clinical Prevention Research, Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC), from January 1st, 2022. The position is open for candidates with an interest in clinical research and with a master’s degree in medicine, human biology, human nutrition, human physiology or a related field.
The department – Clinical Prevention Research aims to improve the health of individuals at high risk with special focus on reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Based on knowledge about the target groups, including their potential barriers or motivation for lifestyle changes, we design, develop, and test feasible interventions with the aim of improving health markers and reducing the overall risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the target populations.
The project – The aim of the specific PhD project is to increase our understanding of appetite control in obesity and type 2 diabetes in the context of meal and exercise timing. A special emphasis of the project will be to examine the complex interplay between hedonic (pleasure-based) and homeostatic (energy status-based) appetite control. Improved understanding of the diurnal variability in human appetite control and metabolism and the extent to which hedonic eating is influenced by body weight and diabetes is crucial for developing novel and feasible prevention and treatment strategies. The project has been supported by a grant from Novo Nordisk A/S.
The job – The PhD student will work closely together with other researchers in Clinical Prevention Research and researchers at the University of Leeds, UK. The PhD candidate will be responsible for writing the study protocol, setting up the study, recruiting and examining participants, supervising students, performing statistical analyses on the collected data, writing scientific manuscripts aimed for publication in international scientific journals, and presenting research findings at national and international conferences.
The candidate – The position is open for candidates with a master’s degree in medicine, human biology, human nutrition, human physiology or a related field. Candidates with documented experience within clinical research, meal and exercise testing, and blood sampling will be prioritized. Experience with scientific writing, data analysis, project coordination and management, as well as research dissemination is an advantage. A great amount of flexibility in working hours must be expected as some of the clinical examinations will be performed during early morning and afternoon/evening hours.
Terms – The PhD candidate will be offered a full-time position for a period of three years. Employment will be in accordance with the relevant collective agreement within the Capital Region of Denmark.
Contact – For further information please contact: Research leader Kristine Færch, MSc, PhD, MBA (Mobile: +45 30 91 30 61) or postdoc Jonas Salling Quist, MSc, PhD (Mobile: +45 26 17 60 64). Interviews will be held in the first two weeks of December.
