A new position as PhD-student at Functional Imaging Unit, Rigshospitalet, Glostrup, University of Copenhagen, is open for application.
Functional Imaging Unit invites applications for a fully financed 3-year PhD-student fellowship within the research project “Rehabilitation in patients with prolonged post-concussion syndrome - The REPCON project” preferably from medical doctors, or civil engineers (typically Med.Tech or similar candidates within neuroscience.
The position is open from the earliest convenience. Enrolment at the Copenhagen Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences within 6 to 12 months from employment is a prerequisite (referring to the Ministerial Order on the PhD Program at Universities, no. 1039, 27. August 2013).
Functional Imaging Unit
Functional Imaging Unit (FIU) was established at Rigshospitalet, Glostrup in 2004 and is headed by Professor Henrik BW Larsson. FIU is part of Dept. of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine, Rigshospitalet. The general scientific aim is to bring advanced physiological or multi-modal MRI methods into clinical research based on physiological insight. Senior researchers at FIU have more than 15 years of experience in investigating neuroscience and neurological disorders using MRI and functional MRI.
The REPCON project
The REPCON project is a large-scale collaboration project with University College Copenhagen (KP) and Norwegian University of Life Science (NMBU). The project comprises:
- A neurobiological assessment of brain function in patients with prolonged post-concussion symptoms using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging – the primary objective of this PhD project.
- A specific tailored exercise interventional program for patients randomized for active treatment.
- Qualitative assessment of patient’s perception of living with concussion symptoms
- A 360-degree evaluation of the entire study by all participants – researchers and patients together.
The PhD project
Conventional brain imaging of patients with post-concussion symptoms, following a mild traumatic brain injury, is commonly without abnormal findings. We hypothesize that post-concussion symptoms are related to altered subtle brain function physiology.
We will focus on the following entities:
1. Investigation of permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) – we hypothesize that an abnormal leakage of the BBB will be present in the REPCON patients. During the last 20 years we have published highly novel results focusing on measuring subtle changes in permeability of the BBB by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI), with special focus on patients with multiple sclerosis, migraine and aging.
2. Investigation of the brain’s microstructure using diffusion MRI.
3. Investigation of the brain metabolism focusing on the brains lactate production.
