Do you want to be Leader of a new Novo Nordisk Foundation Early Detection and Monitoring Initiative of atherosclerosis in collaboration with the Heart Centre Rigshospitalet?

The Novo Nordisk Foundation and Rigshospitalet are planning to establish a new mission-driven Early Detection and Monitoring Initiative (EDMI) of atherosclerosis. The vision of the Initiative is to prevent atherosclerosis and its cardiovascular complications to improve people’s cardiometabolic health, life quality and longevity of life. The mission is to progress international clinical research in prevention and monitoring of atherosclerosis. This international research initiative aims at outlining a novel precision medicine screening program for early detection of atherosclerosis in populations younger than hitherto explored.

The Job

The leader of EDMI will be overall responsible for execution of the Initiative, strategy, enabling interdisciplinary research and collaborations. The Initiative will include both large international prevalence studies, intervention trials, tech- and imaging development and health advocacy.

The EDMI will be located at the Heart Centre at Rigshospitalet, the largest, most specialized hospital in Denmark. The main collaborator will be Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares, the Spanish national centre for cardiovascular research located in Madrid, an internationally, leading cardiovascular research institute. Several more strategic collaborations will be established, both national and international.

EDMI is split into two phases of 2.5 and 5.5 years, respectively. A successful evaluation of phase 1, will activate phase 2.  EDMI is in the planning process now and are expected to launch phase 1 on July 1st, 2024. In the planning until 30 July and in the first phase the leader will have a part time position (approximately 50% time) and the second phase is expected to be a full-time position. The total budget for the initiative is more than DKK 600 million.

The key tasks in the job include:

  • Overall responsibility for ensuring EDMI’s scientific progress, strategy development and securing a fruitful interaction with stakeholders.
  • Stimulate new research projects and maintain the highest scientific standard.
  • Ensuring an open and strong collaboration with the research community within the field.
  • Managerial oversight of EDMI’s leadership team and scientific advisory board.
  • Overall general management responsibility for EDMI’s:
    • Staff recruitment
    • Project team allocations & resources
    • Administrating strategic funding pool for research projects

Leadership Skills:

  • A strong record of accomplishment of relevant leadership experience (financial planning/oversight, ensuring progress on goals, and development of employees).
  • The ability to create and articulate an inspiring scientific vision for EDMI and the organization.
  • The ability to develop and execute mission-driven strategies.
  • Building organisational capability by clearly defining objectives, deliverables, and milestones, and actively facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • An entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing new, innovative ideas that will help fulfil the mission of EDMI.
  • The ability to manoeuvring in a complex international and virtual organisation.

Scientific & Clinical Expertise:

  • Experience working with clinical research, preferentially within the cardiovascular field.
  • Extensive experience in managing a large and international research portfolio.
  • Record of accomplishment in successfully raising international funding.

The Initiative will have researchers at multiple international locations. Some degree of international travelling can be expected in the position.

Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with current public agreements in the Capital Region of Denmark. Availability to start employment in November/December 2023 is ideal.
